Taiwan Youth for Democracy in Asia Celebrates World Youth Day for Democracy 18 October 2006
On 18 October 2006, youths across the global village will unite to celebrate the human progress brought by democratization. On this special occasion, the Taiwan Youth for Democracy in Asia (TYDA) is pleased to announce the launch of the Taiwan Youth Democracy Barometer. The project is an initiative of the Taiwan Youth for Democracy in Asia (TYDA), a youth led organization supported by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD). The Taiwan Youth Democracy Barometer is a pioneering youth initiative to gauge the current state and future course of Taiwans democracy. The project will be both formulated and executed in the narrative of the youths. The Taiwan Youth Democracy Barometer will be the final product of a series of surveys, public symposiums, public debates and group interviews. The data collected from the project will be organized for the purpose of examining the critical questions important to youths on the current state and future course of Taiwan's democracy, and hopes to provide a qualitative assessment of public policies that the government can implement to address the youths' concerns. The World Youth Day for Democracy was launched by the World Youth Movement for Democracy (WYMD) last year as part of the Global Youth Campaign for Democracy. The Global Youth Democracy Campaign promotes activities around the world that: - Mobilize youth to organize and participate in debates, rallies, educational campaigns, vigils, and other non-violent actions to promote democratic values and concepts; The spirit of Taiwan Youth for Democracy in Asia (TYDA) arises from the second Young Volunteers’ Camp hold by Taiwan Foundation of Democracy (TFD) in August 2005. With identical ideas and interests in democracy, these young people keep contact with one another after the camp and participate in many activities held by the TFD, such as World Forum for Democratization in Asia. In September 2005, TYDA, advised by TFD, becomes an organization composed of young people from all over Taiwan. The goal of TYDA is to consolidate Taiwan’s democratic achievement and to promote democracy to all Asian countries. Well-known known for its peaceful transition to democracy, Taiwan is a model for other Asian democratic nations. TYDA holds many activities related to democracy and human rights. Though a young organization, we believe that through our efforts, devotion and networking with other organization through Asia, we will help facilitating the spreading of democracy throughout Asia.
