“Defending Democracy: Hong Kong under Chinese Influence and Taiwan’s Countermeasures” Panel Discussion

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) held a panel discussion on November 21st in Taipei between scholars and democratic activists from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Titled “Defending Democracy: Hong Kong under Chinese Influence and Taiwan’s Countermeasures,” the discussion was about how Hong Kong’s democracy and society have changed under China’s influence and how Taiwan can learn from the Hong Kong experience in order to counter such influence.

A group of journalists from Europe and North visited the TFD and had a lively exchange with TFD Vice President Ketty W. Chen on issues of Taiwan’s democracy, Taiwanese young people’s attitude toward democracy, and China’s mounting influence in the region.
TFD President Liao spoke at the Oslo Freedom Forum in Taiwan

On November 10, the Oslo Freedom Forum held its first ever event in Asia in Taiwan. TFD President Fort Fu-te Liao was invited to join the event and deliver introductory remarks, highlighting the important role Taiwan can play in the international promotion of democracy and human rights.

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy hosted a seminar for Mr. Dharndhanate Punndhanamahakarune The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy hosted a seminar for Mr. Dharndhanate Punndhanamahakarune, TFD’s Dissertation Fellow, at 3:00-4:30 pm on October 31, 2018 at Taiwan Foundation for Democracy. Mr. Dharndhanate Punndhanamahakarune delivered a presentation entitled ‘State, Student Revolutions and the Battle of Hegemony: The Rise and Decline of Democratization in Taiwan and Thailand’. The seminar was moderated by Prof. Juo-Yu Lin, Department of Diplomacy and International Relations at TamKang University, with Dr. Huan-Kai Tseng, adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science, National Taiwan University, as the discussant.

TFD joins Human Rights Defenders World Summit

As part of the global commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the 20th anniversary of the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, TFD President Ford Fu-te Liao participated in the “Human Rights Defenders World Summit 2018,” held in Paris, France from October 29-31. Following the event, Dr. Liao visited key global partners based in France, such as Reporters sans frontiers (RSF) and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), to discuss future cooperation and strengthening of the TFD’s international human rights network.
The 2018 Global Cooperation Training Framework on“Defending Democracy Through Media Literacy” Opening Ceremony

The 2018 Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) International Workshop on “Defending Democracy Through Media Literacy,” co-hosted by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) along with the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), opened today (10/18). The two-day event’s opening ceremony was graced by the presence of TFD Chairman Jia-chyuan Su, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, Digital Minister Audrey Tang, AIT Director William Brent Christensen, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Scott Busby.

The TFD hosted a seminar for Mr. Klaikong Vaidhyakarn, the TFD’s Democracy and Human Rights Service Fellow, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm on October 16, 2018 at the foundation. Mr. Klaikong Vaidhyakarn delivered a presentation entitled ‘Civic Tech and Digital Civic Participation: Taiwan’s Experiences and How to Replicate to Thailand.’ Dr. Yeh-Chung Lu, Vice President of the TFD, was invited to moderate the seminar while Mr. Pomin Wu, g0v.tw, was invited as the discussant.

MacDonald-Laurier Institute Managing Director Brian Lee Crowley visited the TFD and had an informative exchange with TFD President Ford Fu-Te Liao and Vice President Ketty W. Chen about issues of disinformation, China’s influence and possible future collaboration between the two institutions.
