The Delegation of Taipei Bar Association on September 3 visited the TFD and was received by TFD President Liao Fu-Te and Bo Tedards, Director of International Cooperation. The group included Lawyer Wei, Lawyer Tsai ,Dr. S. Chandra Mohan, Dr. Bui Nguyen Khanh, Dr. Azhari Yahya and Dr. Anna Maria Ada Dalena Abad. The Delegation of Taipei Bar Association learned about the working programs of the TFD and discussed future collaboration.

The 2018 Asia Young Leaders for Democracy (AYLD), an annual program organized by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, closed today in Taipei. The program this year brought together 17 young democracy and human rights practitioners from over 10 countries Asia to engage with local NGOs and experts throughout the course of nine days.

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) is calling for nominations for the 13th Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award (ADHRA)! What is the ADHRA? There was no award recognizing efforts in developing or sustaining democracy and human rights in Asia until 2006. As the first national democracy assistance foundation in Asia, the TFD established the ADHRA — the first democracy and human rights award in Asia — to support courageous individuals and groups who build democracy, stand up for justice, and defend human rights. The ADHRA is annually awarded to one individual or organization that has made significant contributions to the advancement of democracy or human rights in Asia through peaceful means.

The Delegation of U.S. Midwestern States Legislative Leaders visited Taiwan Foundation for Democracy on August 30th, and received by Dr. Jiann-Fa, Yan, Vice President of TFD, and Allen Peng, Director of Research and Development. Delegation of U.S. Midwestern States Legislative Leaders watched the introduction film of TFD first, which was followed by a discussion with the Delegation. In addition to emphasize the importance of democracy principle, Delegation also concerned the issue of democracy and mission and task of TFD. Both sides engaged in a conversation about TFD’s structure, implementation of international grants, prospect of China democratic development and value of Taiwan democracy

The Hong Kong Civic Party paid a visit to TFD at August 28, 2018 and was received by Dr. Fort Fu-Te, Liao and Dr. Jiann-Fa, Yan, Vice President of TFD. After President Liao’s introduction on the vision and working programs of TFD. Both sides engaged in a conversation about Taiwan’s democratization, democratic education and Hong Kong’s democratic movement. The delegation paid special attention on TFD’s effort on promoting NGO diplomacy outside the field of Track One Diplomacy, and how the grass root social movement was of use as the effective way to push for transition in 1980s. They enjoyed the fruitful discussion.

The TFD attended the Asian Electoral Stakeholders Forum IV in Colombo, Sri Lanka on August 27-28. The TFD organized a delegation of Taiwanese election experts, including Professor Mu-min Chen, Board Member of TFD; Professor Chiung-chu Lin, Department Of Political Science Soochow University; Professor Shiow-duan Hawang, Chairperson of Citizen Congress Watch; and Professor Chien-fu Chen, Honorary Chaiperson of Taiwan Asian Network for Free Elections (TANFREL), accompanied by Bo Tedards, Director of International Cooperation of TFD. The AESF was co-organized by the Election Commission of Sri Lanka and the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) under the theme “Advancing Election Transparency and Integrity: Promoting and Defending Democracy Together.” Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena was the guest of honor in the Opening Ceremony, and 250 representatives from 45 countries participated, representing 15 Asian election commissions, more than a hundred election monitoring organizations from all over the world, INGOs, and intergovernmental institutions including the United Nations. The panels covered the current state of democracy in Asia, the common electoral challenges in the region, and various practices employed to improve the quality of elections. By attending this event, the TFD facilitated the interaction of Taiwanese election stakeholders with their counterparts in other countries and promoted Taiwan’s democratic experience.
