Visit of Canadian Think Tank Leaders and Scholars

The Delegation of Canadian Think Tank Leaders and Scholars visited the TFD on August 15th and was received by Vice President Ketty W. Chen. Vice President Chen introduced to the delegation about the structure and general works of TFD, both sides comprehensively exchanged ideas regarding the major projects of human rights and democracy conducted by TFD.
Visit of the Congressional Staff Delegation to the Taiwan

The Congressional Staff Delegation to the Taiwan paid a visit to TFD at August 13, 2018 and was received by Dr. Yeh-Chung, Lu, Vice President of TFD and Dr. Allen Peng, Director of Research and Development Department. After VP Lu’s introduction on the vision and working programs of TFD. Both sides engaged in a conversation about Taiwan’s democratization and domestic politics. The delegation paid special attention on TFD’s effort on collaborating with NGOs from Asian countries to promote human rights and further political liberalization. They enjoyed the fruitful discussion.
Presentation by TFD Dissertation Fellow Tommy Chung Yin Kwan

Mr. Tommy Chung Yin Kwan, the TFD’s Dissertation Fellow, made a presentation on his research project on August 13th, 2018 at the TFD. Mr. Kwan started his five-month TFD fellowship in March, 2018. The title of his presentation was “The Mechanism of Party-Movement Relations: the Case of DPP and the Sunflower Movement in Taiwan,” in which Mr. Kwan aims at articulating the relationship between political parties and social movements in Taiwan and especially focusing on DPP and the Sunflower Movement. Dr. Yeh-chung Lu, Vice President of the TFD, moderated the presentation, and Mr. J. Michael Cole, Chief Editor of Taiwan Sentinel, was invited to be the discussant.
Visit of Youth Democrats of Democratic Party in Hong Kong

The Delegation of Young Democrats of Democratic Party in Hong Kong visited Taiwan Foundation for Democracy on August 10th, and received by Allen Peng, Director of Research and Development. Delegates of Young Democrats watched the introduction film of TFD first. Since Young Democrats has quite concerned the issue of youth affairs and relationship of cross-strait, both sides discussed topics of major human rights and democracy projects conducted by TFD, international grants policy, exchange programs with Hong Kong and democratic development in Taiwan.

Presentation by TFD Dissertation Fellow Andrew Greve

The TFD and the Department of Diplomacy of National Chengchi University co-hosted the presentation made by Mr. Andrew Greve, the TFD’s Dissertation Fellow, on August 9th, 2018 at National Chengchi University’s Diplomacy Department. Mr. Greve started his three-month TFD fellowship in May, 2018. The title of his presentation was “Social Comparison and the Moderation of Rising State Status Demands: The case of China,” in which Mr. Greve argued that to understand states’ status demand, the interaction between the rising power and the social environment must be considered, focusing especially on China. Dr. Hong-yi Lien, Dean of Department of Diplomacy at National Chengchi University, was invited to moderate the presentation, and Dr. Arthur S. Ding, Professor Emeritus at the Graduate Institute of East Asian Studies, National Chengchi University, was invited to be the discussant.
Visit of President Juli Minoves

Dr. Juli Minoves, the current President of Liberal International, and William Townsend, Head of Communication and Political Outreach, visited the TFD on July 30th and received by President Liao Fu-te, and Allen Peng, Director of Research and Development. In addition to understand the structure and general works of TFD, both sides comprehensively exchanged ideas regarding the major projects of human rights and democracy conducted by TFD, and have discussed the cooperation in the future.
Seminar by Mr. Christopher Carothers, the Dissertation Fellow at TFD

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy and Department of Public Policy and Management of Shih Hsin University co-hosted a seminar for Mr. Christopher Carothers, the TFD’s Dissertation Fellow, at 11:30-13:00 on July 25, 2018 at the Shih Hsin University.Mr. Carothers delivered a presentation entitled ‘Corruption Control Before and After Democratization: A Comparative Study of Taiwan and South Korea’ and was moderated by Dr. Hsin-Chung Liao, associate professor at the Department of Public Policy and Management of Shih Hsin University. Dr. Hans Hangpu Tung, assistant professor at the Department of Political Science of National Taiwan University and Dr. Chelsea Chia-chen Chou, assistant professor at the Graduate Institute of National Development of National Taiwan University, was invited as the seminar's discussants.
Visit of Amb. Derek Mitchell

Amb. Derek Mitchell on July 19 visited the TFD and was received by TFD President Liao Fu-Te and Bo Tedards, Director of International Cooperation. Amb. Derek Mitchell engaged in a conversation about the TFD’s operations, Taiwan’s democratization, international networking. They are looking forward to expanding the organization and building partnerships through the platform to deepen democracy.
