Delegation of Members of the European Parliament visits TFD

The Delegation of Members of the European Parliament on July 19 visited the TFD and was received by TFD President Liao Fu-Te and Bo Tedards, Director of International Cooperation. The four-person group included Vice-Chair of the Delegation for relations with the People’s Republic of China Reinhard Bütikofer, Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development Herbert Dorfmann,Chair of the Committee on Budgetary Control Ingeborg Grässle, EPP Group Adviser Michael Hahn.The Delegation of Members of the European Parliament learned about the vision and working programs of the TFD and Taiwan’s democratic development among other topics.
Dr. Ford Fu-Te Liao takes office as TFD President

On July 10, 2018, the TFD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Ford Fu-Te Liao as President of the TFD, effective July 16.

Visit of the 2018 Boise State University Delegation

The Boise State University Delegation is a summer internship co-hosted by Providence University and Taiwan Think-tank, including 8 students of Political Science, Economics, Accountancy, Urban Studies, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, International Business, and Business Administration paid a visit to the TFD on June 29, 2018. The delegation was received by Bo Tedards, Director of International Cooperation, who introduced the vision and working programs of the TFD. Afterwards, the interns engaged in a conversation about the soft power of Taiwanese civil society to support the TFD’s domestic and international mission, the comparison of Taiwan’s Sunflower Movement and Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement, and the international NGO’s developmental strategies in Taiwan under China’s influence and so on. By this visit, the interns learned about the TFD’s mission and Taiwan’s role in regional democratic development.
The Fifth East Asia Democracy Forum in Taipei

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy held the fifth East Asia Democracy Forum in Taipei on June 26th. The theme of this year’s forum is “Prevent Democratic Backsliding.” Democracies around the world are experiencing various predicaments, including the loss of confidence in the democratic system in those more mature democracies and the democratic regression in the new and fragile democracies. The core values of democracy such as freedom of speech, freedom of press and political and social pluralism are encountering great challenges in the era of social media and new informational technologies and in a time when authoritarian regimes are offering what they call the "alternative model."

President Tsai Ing-wen meets Taiwan Foundation for Democracy 15th anniversary conference delegation

On June 26, 2018, President Tsai Ing-wen met with experts, scholars, and think-tank representatives from around the world attending an international conference marking the 15th anniversary of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD). They were accompanied by Secretary-General of National Security Council David Lee, TFD Vice Chairman Joseph Jaushieh Wu, TFD President Szu-chien Hsu, TFD Vice President Ketty W. Chen, and TFD Member of Board of Trustee Fort Fu-Te Liao.
Taiwan Foundation for Democracy 15th Anniversary Event

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy held the celebration event for its 15th anniversary today (6/25). Established in 2003, the TFD is the first national democracy assistance foundation in Asia, and has been dedicated to assisting the deepening of Taiwan’s democracy, promoting democracy in Asia, and becoming an active participant in the global democratic network. At today’s conference, the TFD invited regional and global democratic advocates and the TFD’s partners to together celebrate the foundation’s 15th anniversary and examine the challenges democracy faces today and what are the possible counter-tactics.

TFD joins the Community of Democracies Civil Society Assembly in Santiago, Chile

The Civil Society Assembly of the Community of Democracies was held on June 24-25 in Santiago, Chile. TFD Senior Fellow Amb. Michael Kau and Director of International Cooperation Bo Tedards attended the meeting, in order to promote global democratic development and Taiwan’s linkages with the Community of Democracies, through “track two” diplomacy. At the Assembly, delegates from 26 countries around the world discussed the future work of the Community of Democracies, notably the recently adopted 2018-2013 Strategic Plan.
Taiwan-US Policy Program Delegation visits TFD

TFD President Szu-chien Hsu and Vice President Ketty W. Chen received the visit of the Taiwan-US Policy Program Delegation. In order to facilitate the delegation’s understanding on Taiwan’s democracy and human rights, the TFD invited NGO representatives including the Covenants Watch Convener Song-lih Huang, Open Cultural Foundation Secretary Lulu Keng, Former Environmental Jurists Association Secretary-General Echo Lin, and Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association Director of Policy Advocacy Sih-cheng Du to attend this meeting. These NGOs representatives introduced the delegation how Taiwan connects itself to international human rights network, Taiwan’s action against disinformation, the progress of Taiwan’s environmental movement, and current status of LGBT rights in Taiwan.
