Visit of the 2018 Mosaic Taiwan Delegation

US and Canadian participants of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ 2018 Mosaic Taiwan Fellowship Program led by Amb. Michel Ching-long Lu paid a visit to the TFD on June 13, 2018. The delegation was received by Bo Tedards, Director of International Cooperation, and Eric Yu, Director of Domestic Affairs, who introduced the vision and working programs of the TFD. Afterwards, the fellows engaged in a conversation about the TFD’s operations, including the fellowship program, political party grants, grants on human rights, international networking, and the experiences working with newly democratic countries. In addition, they raised questions about Taiwan’s election system, the democratic development in the Asian region, and the impact of China’s new NGO law. By this visit, the fellows learned about the TFD’s mission and Taiwan’s role in regional democratic development.
Visit of the Congressional Staff Delegation to the Taiwan

The Congressional Staff Delegation to the Taiwan paid a visit to TFD at May 31st, 2018 and was received by Dr. Eric Yu, Director of Domestic Affairs Department. After Dr. Yu’s introduction on the vision and working programs of TFD. Both sides engaged in a conversation about Taiwan’s democratization, Taiwan’s election system and the impact of China’s growing sharp power. They enjoyed the fruitful discussion.
The TFD holds the “Defending Democracy: Combating Authoritarian Corrosion” Symposium

The TFD today held the “Defending Democracy: Combating Authoritarian Corrosion” Symposium at the Howard Civil Service International House. The conference discussed what revisionist regimes have been up to in recent years through an exchange between leaders who have spearheaded efforts in their home countries to awaken citizens and governments to the external challenges to democracies. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Taiwan Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs François Chih-Chung Wu, and guest speakers included Princeton University Politics and International Affairs Professor Aaron Friedberg, University of Canterbury Political Science Professor Anne-Marie Brady, Former Fairfax Media China Correspondent John Garnaut, National Endowment for Democracy International Forum for Democratic Studies Director Shanthi Kalathil, Academia Sinica Institute of Sociology Associate Research Fellow Jieh-min Wu, and Taiwan Sentinel Chief Editor J. Michael Cole.
Visit of Professor Minxin Pei

Dr. Minxin Pei, professor at the Claremont McKenna College and the director of the Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies paid a visit to the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy on May 9th, 2018, and was welcomed by Vice President Ketty W. Chen, and Vice President Yeh-Chung Lu. Both sides engaged in a conversation about China’s democratization, political reform, China-U.S. relations and the relations among major powers. Dr. Pei also acknowledged TFD’s continuous effort in raising international awareness on China’s human rights through the publication of the annual China Human Rights Report.
The International Press Group of Taiwan’s Political and Economic Development Visits the TFD

The International Press Group of Taiwan’s Political and Economic Development on May 7 visited the TFD. The group of 14 journalists was received by TFD Vice President Ketty W. Chen and included Breitbart News Network’s Kristina Wong, Tribune Chronicle’s Brenda J. Linert, Pasadena Weekly’s Nasir Nehdar, National Review’s Theodore Kupfer, Ottawa Citizen’s James Richard Trottier, Salzburger Nachrichten’s Helmut Mueller, L’Obs’ Ursula Gauthier, L’Express’ Charles Haquet, Eleftheros Typos’ Maria-Niki Georganta, Eesti Paevaleht’s Kadri Veermae, Publico’s Joao Andre de Almeida Ruela Ribeiro, Die Welt’s Marko Martin, HVG’s Ibolya Jakus, and The SME Daily’s Lukas Ondercanin. Both sides engaged in a conversation about press freedom, elections, disinformation, transitional justice, and authoritarian encroachment among other topics.
The American Council of Young Political Leaders Visits TFD

The American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) on April 30 visited the TFD and was received by TFD President Hsu Szu-chien and TFD Vice President Ketty W. Chen. The seven-person group included University of Colorado System Regent Kyle Hybl, Mississippi House of Representatives Member Lataisha Jackson, Office of the Attorney General Assistant Solicitor General Angela Paton, SKDKnickerbocker Managing Director Alex Braun, Association for Justice Executive Director Liz Berry, City of Omaha Citizen Review Complaint Board Chair Roger Garcia, and Indiana State Treasurer Communications Director Catherine Seat. Both sides engaged in a conversation about same-sex marriage in Taiwan, cross-Strait relations, and Taiwan’s democratic development among other topics.
The European Women's Management Development Network Visits TFD

The European Women's Management Development Network (EWMD) on April 25 visited the TFD. TFD Vice President Ketty W. Chen received the group and also invited representatives from Women Awaking, The Garden of Hope Foundation, International Federation of Business & Professional Women, Taiwan (BPW,Taiwan), and Professor Chou Wan-yao of the History Department at National Taiwan University to join in a discussion about the development of women's movement under Taiwan’s democratization and sustainable development of women's international relations among other topics.
Press Conference about 2018 TFD Survey on Taiwanese Young People's Political Attitudes

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) on April 19 held a press conference at the TFD about the 2018 TFD survey on Taiwanese young people’s political attitudes. The event was hosted by TFD President Hsu Szu-chien and invited scholars included Wu Nai-teh, Adjuct Research Fellow of the Institute of Sociology at Academia Sinica, Lin Thung-hong, Associate Research Fellow of the Institute of Sociology at Academia Sinica, and Tsai Chia-hung, Director of the Election Study Center at National Chengchi University.

TFD President Szu-chien Hsu made a presentation on Tuesday (4/3) on Taiwanese young people’s political attitude toward cross-strait relations and commitment to democratic values and self-defense at the Global Taiwan Institute on Tuesday (4/3). GTI Executive Director Russell Hsiao was the event host and Dr. Daniel Twining, President of the International Republican Institute (IRI), was the discussant. Facing China’s threat of using force for unification, close to 70 percent (68%) of the Taiwanese people said they would fight for Taiwan, and those with higher commitment to democratic values are more willing to do so than those with lower commitment to democracy.
Attends 15th Annual Conference of European Association of Taiwan Studies in Zurich

For strengthen the cooperation between TFD and European academic groups, Dr. Allen Peng who is the Director of Research and Development Department of TFD, Chang-ling Huang, the Professor of National Taiwan University, Yoonkyung Lee, the Associate Professor of University of Toronto and Michael Seeberg, the Associate Professor of University of Southern Denmark attended the 15th Annual Conference of European Association of Taiwan Studies at University of Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland from April 4th to 6th.
