Bersih 2.0 Receives the 2017 Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) held a press conference at the briefing room in Legislative Yuan. TFD Chairman Su Jia-chyuan announced the 2017 Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award (ADHRA) will be awarded to Bersih 2.0. Bersih 2.0 is a regional organization working on the reform of transparent and fair election, with its headquarters in Malaysia. At the press conference, President Szu-chien Hsu introduced the background of ADHRA and its review process this year. Chairman Su, in his speech, mentioned that Taiwan has experienced many difficulties from the transition of democracy, so Taiwanese people realize that only fair electoral system could realize the practice of democracy.

The annual Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award (ADHRA) was established by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) in 2006 to encourage individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to promoting democracy and protecting human rights through peaceful means in Asia. TFD is holding a press conference at the Briefing Room of the Legislative Yuan on November 15th, where TFD Chairman, Legislative Yuan Speaker Su Jia-chyuan, will announce the 2017 Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award recipient. The official award ceremony will be held on December 10th, the International Human Rights Day. President Tsai Ing-wen and TFD Chairman Su Jia-chyuan will present the award plaque and grant to the laureate.

And look forward to helping promote Japan's establishment of the "Japan Foundation for Democracy " to exert even greater influence.
Attend The 12th InterEthnic/InterFaith Leadership Conference

TFD Vice President Maysing Yang was invited to participate The 12th InterEthnic/InterFaith Leadership Conference, organized by Initiatives for China (aka Citizen Power),held at Tokyo, Japan on November 14-17, 2017. The theme of this year’s Conference is “Advancing Human Rights, Democracy and Peace: New Tools, New Strategies, New Generation”. To exchange views with nearly 60 human rights activists from all over the world. And on behalf of recipient Ms. Wang Qiaoling, who represents the families of the “709” victims won the 2017 Citizenship Award.
Visit of Delegates of the Canadian Youth Leaders

A delegation of the Canadian Youth Leaders paid a visit to the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy on Dec. 13, 2017. It was received by TFD Vice President, Dr. Ketty W. Chen. Following the introduction of TFD’s domestic and international missions and programs, both sides exchanged ideas on issues such as democracy transformation, political participation among woman and youth in Taiwan.
Taiwan Foundation for Democracy invited political scientists to use TFD survey data for research paper writing and present their papers in 2017 annual meeting of Taiwanese Political Science Association.

For investigating Taiwanese public opinion, especially the Taiwanese public’s democratic value and their perception of social justice, Taiwan Foundation for Democracy has consistently conducted public opinion survey since 2012. For fully utilizing these survey data, TFD co-hosted the “Democratic Participation and Social Justice” panel with the Taiwanese Political Science Association at its Annual Conference on November 12, 2017 and invited scholars to present their research papers by using the survey data “Democratic Participation in Taiwan, 2016” and “The Evaluation of Social Justice in Taiwan, 2017”. In this panel, Dr. Chang-ling Huang from Department of Political Science, NTU served as panel moderator. Mr. Wen-zheng Lin from Department of Political Science, NCCU, Dr. Yen-hsin Cheng, and Dr. Thung- hong Lin from Institution of Sociology, Dr. Kuang-hui Chen from Department of Political Science, CCU, Dr. Chia-hung Tsai and Dr. Pei-ting Lin from, Election Study Center, NCCU presented their research papers and share their findings with audience.

To further enhance the academic engagement and value of the China Human Rights Reports published annually by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, TFD cooperated with the Taiwanese Political Science Association in holding the “China Human Rights Research Panel” at the 2017 Taiwan Political Science Association Annual Conference on November 12, 2017.
