East Asia Democracy Forum in New York
2017/09/18
Taiwan has been one of the few persistent and vibrant democracies in East Asia. It has been ranked as a free country, with both political right and civil liberty ranked “most free” by the Freedom House in 2017. Reporters without Borders, who has opened its first Asia bureau in Taipei earlier this year, also ranks Taiwan top among Asian countries for press freedom in 2017. In a time of democratic recession and authoritarian expansion, the case of Taiwan as a sustainable democracy dedicated to human rights protection is one worthy of world’s attention, particularly considering the fact that the country is denied representation in the United Nations. The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, the first publicly funded institution committed to international democracy promotion in the region, is glad and honored to collaborate with Freedom House to facilitate this forum in New York. The forum will bring together specialists studying democracy and human rights to discuss the case of Taiwan as one that underwent successful democratization, as a democracy capable of resisting retrogression and as a case of advancing human rights. More importantly, this forum will also examine the implications of Taiwan’s democracy for the prospect of a more democratic East Asia, including China, and how it might contribute to the stability and prosperity of the region and the world.
