Nominations for the 14th Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award Open!

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) is calling for nominations for the 14th Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award (ADHRA)! What is the ADHRA? There was no award recognizing efforts in developing or sustaining democracy and human rights in Asia until 2006. As the first national democracy assistance foundation in Asia, the TFD established the ADHRA — the first democracy and human rights award in Asia — to support courageous individuals and groups who build democracy, stand up for justice, and defend human rights. The ADHRA is annually awarded to one individual or organization that has made significant contributions to the advancement of democracy or human rights in Asia through peaceful means.

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) made public today (12/05) the report of the study conducted by Sway Strategy, commissioned by the TFD, on how information operations have been done on Facebook in Taiwan via the so-called template website fanpages. The study, by examining the discussion patterns on Facebook regarding certain headline incidents in Taiwan that had sparked countrywide debate, identified that certain groups had a pattern of disseminating information that was different from the usual information-disseminating pattern on Facebook.

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) held a press conference today (11/28). TFD President Ford Fu-Te Liao announced the 2019 Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award (ADHRA) will be awarded to the Diplomacy Training Program. Established in 1989, DTP was founded by HE José Ramos-Horta, (1996 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of Timor-Leste) and University of New South Wales Emeritus Professor Garth Nettheim. The Diplomacy Training Program (DTP) is an independent, non-government organization (NGO) providing education in human rights advocacy based in Sydney, Australia. It seeks to advance human rights and empower civil society in the Asia Pacific region through quality training and by building the skills and capacities of advocates in the Asia-Pacific and MENA region.

Visit of the Latin American Press Group The Latin American Press Group paid a visit to the TFD on 19th November, 2019, and was received by Vice President Yeh-Chung Lu and Dr. Allen Peng, Director of Research and Development Department. After the introduction on the vision and working programs of TFD, both sides discussed the Cross-strait relations, Taiwan’s democratization process and the multiple challenges facing it. They enjoyed the fruitful discussion.

Taiwan Foundation for Democracy cooperated with Carnegie Endowment for International Peace to hold a workshop, which was entitled with “Responding to New Pressures: Survival and Renewal of Civic Activism in Asia”. The main issues of this workshop were focused on the state of activism in Asia, the role of digital technology, and new pressure on civic space.

The program includes short speeches from three cross-generational Taiwanese human rights defenders, and TFD’s exhibition on “Taiwan’s Journey to Democracy: Pursuit of a Century”

The Delegation of European Scholars, and Policy Planning Officials from France, Germany and Poland paid a visit to the TFD on 21st October, 2019, and was received by Vice President Yeh-Chung Lu and Dr. Allen Peng, Director of Research and Development Department. After VP Lu’s introduction on the vision and working programs of TFD, both sides discussed Cross-strait relations, the Hong Kong issues, TFD’s efforts on strengthening democratic institutions through collaborating with local NGOs, and exchanged opinions on the growing concern of Chinese sharp powers.

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy and Czech think tank Sinopsis co-hosted "Taiwan Demystified" side event at Forum 2000 in Prague this year. The event was held at the Vaclav Havel Liberary. The event was to "demystified" Taiwan as a democratic country in a difficult geo-political position. An important investment partner for the Czech Republic, this event clarified the current status of Taiwan internationally and democratically.
