Details and presentation about the TFD survey on the Taiwanese young people's political attitudes released!Print

Date: 2018-04-10

Check out the following two links for details and a presentation about a survey on the Taiwanese young people's political attitudes:

  1. 「2018 臺灣民主價值與治理」 民意調查計畫簡要說明 (Chinese)
  2. “A Political Profile of Taiwan’s Youth: Democratic Support, Natural independence, and Commitment to Defense”

TFD President Szu-chien Hsu made a presentation on Tuesday (4/3) on Taiwanese young people’s political attitude toward cross-strait relations and commitment to democratic values and self-defense at the Global Taiwan Institute on Tuesday (4/3). GTI Executive Director Russell Hsiao was the event host and Dr. Daniel Twining, President of the International Republican Institute (IRI), was the discussant.

Facing China’s threat of using force for unification, close to 70 percent (68%) of the Taiwanese people said they would fight for Taiwan, and those with higher commitment to democratic values are more willing to do so than those with lower commitment to democracy.

While the young generation of Taiwan are described as “naturally pro-independent (天然獨),” what it means, the survey results show, is actually that they are more “anti-unification” than “aiming to change the status-quo and declare de jure independence.”

It is also found that compared to their US and European counterparts, Taiwanese young people are more supportive of democracy than the older cohorts. 86.2 percent of those aged between 20 and 39 believe that democracy is still the best political system despite the problems it has.
